The Brian Mulroney stamp pays tribute to The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney (1939-2024), Canada’s 18th prime minister. Serving from 1984 to 1993, Brian Mulroney led transformative economic, environmental and political initiatives.
Canada Post has a longstanding tradition of commemorating former prime ministers through the annual commemorative Canada Post stamp program.
The Right Honourable Martin Brian Mulroney, C.C., (1939-2024) was Canada’s 18th prime minister, serving from 1984 to 1993. Considered one of Canada’s most consequential prime ministers, he believed that Canadian democracy “is advanced by the collision of great ideas and the articulation of competing visions of the country.” Born in Baie-Comeau, Quebec, the son of an electrician, Mulroney earned a degree in political science from St. Francis Xavier University and a law degree at Université Laval. He worked as a lawyer and corporate executive before he was elected leader of the Progressive Conservative Party in 1983. He led the party to a record-breaking win in the general election the following year. His government ushered in significant privatizations, tax reforms and deregulations and reduced government expenditures. It also introduced transformative economic and environmental initiatives, including the Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement, the North American Free Trade Agreement and the Canada-U.S. Air Quality Agreement. Under his leadership, Canada took on influential roles on the global stage, notably in the campaign against apartheid in South Africa and in the reunification of Germany at the close of the Cold War.
