These two Canadian steamships, still in operation, allow passengers to sample the dignified luxuries enjoyed by travellers in years gone by. The Segwun is North America's oldest operational steamship. She was prefabricated in 1887 in Scotland and assembled at Gravenhurst, Ontario as a sidewheeler under the name Nipissing II. Her engine and other machinery came from the wreck of the Nipissing I. Rebuilt in 1925 as a twin screw steamer and rechristened the Segwun, she still cruises Ontario's Muskoka Lakes, each year gaining renown for her beauty and elegance. Toronto designer Douglas Champion has painted both of these steamships in appropriate settings. The designs convey the contrast in scale between the Segwun, a small inland steamer constructed mostly of wood, and the massive all steel steamship, the Princess Marguerite. Both paintings capture the mood and feeling of the vessels in operation.
